Using chat
Posting messages, quoting a reply, attaching photos and PDFs, reacting, and controlling which conversations notify you.
Once chat is on, a conversation looks the same wherever it appears: on a session, on an event, or in a channel.
Post a message
Type in the box at the bottom and click Post Message. Messages appear for everyone else in the conversation straight away, without anybody reloading.
A message can be up to 4,000 characters. Messages are grouped by day, and the point you last read up to is marked, so coming back to a busy conversation you can see what is new.
Reply to a message
Click Reply under the message you are answering. It is pinned above the composer as a quote, so your reply carries the context with it, and anyone reading later can click the quote to jump back to the original.
Click the cross on the quote to drop it and post an ordinary message instead.
If the message you quoted is later deleted, your reply stays and the quote reads Message deleted, so the conversation still makes sense.
A message can carry a quote or an attachment, not both. Attaching a file removes the quote, and the composer warns you before it does.
Attach a photo or a PDF
Click Attach.
- Up to 4 files on one message.
- Up to 10MB each.
- JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and PDF only.
The file type is checked from the file itself rather than its name, so renaming something to .pdf does not get it in.
React to a message
Click the smiley under a message and pick one of seven reactions: 👍 ❤️ 😂 😢 🎉 👀 👎.
Reactions are gathered into a summary row under the message with a count. Click the summary to see who reacted. Click your own reaction again to take it off.
The author of a message is told when somebody reacts to it. That arrives as a bell alert only, never as an email or a push notification, and it respects a muted conversation: mute the conversation and the reactions go quiet with the messages.
See who is in the chat
In a channel, the avatars in the header show who is in it. Click them for the full list.
Session and event conversations are open to everyone who can see the session or event, so there is no fixed list to show and the header shows no avatars.
Choose which conversations notify you
Every conversation has a Mute notifications button in its header, and a Turn on notifications button once muted. This is per conversation: muting Thursday's session says nothing about any other.
You are followed into a conversation automatically, so there is normally nothing to turn on:
- Booking a session subscribes you to its conversation.
- Being assigned to coach one does too.
- Posting or replying in a session or event conversation subscribes you to it.
- Channels are subscribed from the moment you are in one.
What actually reaches you, and whether by email, by bell alert or by push, is set once for all conversations at Profile > Notifications. See Notification preferences.
Delete your own message
Delete appears under your own messages. It also appears to anyone with the Manage Chats permission, on any message.
Deleting is permanent. Replies that quoted the message stay, showing Message deleted in place of the quote.
Report a message
Report appears under every message, including your own. Click it, optionally say what is wrong in up to 500 characters, and confirm.
The report goes to the club's moderators, who see it at Admin > Chat > Reported. Nothing visible happens in the conversation: the person you reported is not told, and the message stays where it is until a moderator acts.
Only the first report on a message raises an alert, so several people reporting the same thing does not turn into a pile of notifications.
See Moderating chat for what happens next.
