# Content editing & navigation

> Add custom pages to your ClubPal site, choose who can see them, and manage your site menu, all from one screen.

Section: Club website

ClubPal has content management tools that allow you to add custom pages to your ClubPal site. This means you can add information about your club, or even host your club's website on ClubPal.

Every page on your site (your own custom pages, the built-in pages ClubPal provides, and your blogs) is managed from one screen: **Admin > Content > Pages**. From there you also control what appears in your site menu, and you can restrict a custom page to particular members using eligibility rules.

> **Note**
>
> For a list of dated posts, such as club news or match reports, see [Blogs](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/blogs/overview) instead of a single content page.

## How each page is edited

ClubPal is moving every editable page onto the [page editor](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/page-editor), where a page is built from sections and blocks. Some built-in pages are still edited with the older [portlet](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/portlets) style. This table is the quickest way to tell which is which.

| Page | How you edit it |
| --- | --- |
| Your custom content pages | [Page editor](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/page-editor) |
| Home | [Page editor](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/homepage) |
| Membership, Passes, Contact, Payment | [Classic portlets](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/portlets) |

## The Pages screen

Go to **Admin > Content > Pages**. Every page your site can show lives here, split into two areas:

- **Navigation**: shown in the site menu, in this order.
- **Not in navigation**: pages that exist and are reachable by their web address, but are not linked from the menu.

Drag a page between the two areas to add it to the menu or remove it, without deleting the page itself. Drag within **Navigation** to reorder the menu, and drag an item slightly to the right, just below the page you want as its parent, to nest it one level deep as a dropdown.

Every row carries a type badge:

| Badge | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| **Page** | One of your own custom content pages |
| **Built-in** | A page ClubPal provides, such as Sessions, Membership, or Store |
| **Blog** | A blog you have created |

A row also shows a **Draft** badge if a custom page is unpublished, and a chip summarising who can see it when access is restricted.

There is no Save button for the tree. Menu changes (what is in it, its order, and its dropdowns) save themselves shortly after you drop, and a short status message beside the **Add** button tells you when that has happened. If you move something by mistake, drag it back. A page's own settings, covered next, are saved separately when you click **Save** in its settings dialog.

Each row has a settings button (the gear icon), and content pages also have a delete button (the trash icon). What the settings button opens depends on the row's type.

### Adding a page or a blog

Click **Add** above the list, then choose **Add page** or **Add blog**.

Adding a page opens the same settings dialog described below, with the title **Add page**. Fill in a title, description, and web address, then click **Save**. You are taken straight into the page editor to build its content, see [Page editor](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/page-editor).

Adding a blog takes you to the blog's own edit screen, see [Blogs](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/blogs/overview).

### Your own pages

Click the settings button on one of your custom pages to open **Page settings**.

| Setting | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **Page title** | Used as the title in the browser address bar, on the page header, and by search engines for listing content. |
| **Description** | A short summary used by search engines and link previews. It is not shown to visitors on the page itself. |
| **URL** | The address of the page on your site, for example a URL of `about-us` gives an address of `https://your-site.clubpal.app/about-us`. Changing it breaks any existing links to the old address. |
| **Published** | An unpublished page is visible to administrators only. Set it to Published when you are ready for everyone to see it. |
| **Menu label** | The wording shown in the site menu. Only appears once the page is in **Navigation**; a page on the shelf has no menu label to set until you drag it in. |

Who can see the page is set separately, see [Restricting who can see a page](#restricting-who-can-see-a-page) below.

> **Tip**
>
> Deleting a page (the trash icon on its row) cannot be undone, so double check before confirming.

### Built-in pages

Click the settings button on a built-in page, such as Sessions or Membership, and you get a short explanation rather than a form: built-in pages are controlled by the feature they belong to, so only their menu label can be changed here.

If a built-in page's feature is switched off for your club, its row shows an **Off in settings** chip, and its settings dialog points you to the setting that turns it on, for example **Open Membership settings**. This is so adding a switched-off feature to your menu tells you why nothing is showing, rather than leaving a link on your site that goes nowhere. Files is the exception: it has no settings screen of its own, so its dialog explains that instead of offering a link.

### Blogs

Click the settings button on a blog and you get its menu label plus a link to **Manage this blog**, which takes you to **Admin > Content > Blogs**. A blog's own settings, including who can see it and what it contains, live on the blog itself, not in this dialog. See [Blogs](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/blogs/overview).

> **Note**
>
> Blogs do not support the eligibility rules described below. A blog's own **Members Only** setting is a separate, simpler switch, see [Blogs](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/blogs/overview).

## Restricting who can see a page

Open the settings for one of your own pages and scroll to **Who can see this page**. Leave it empty and the page is public. Add rules and a visitor must satisfy every rule group you add, otherwise the page is hidden from the menu and refuses to open. Within a group you choose **Match all (AND)** or **Match any (OR)**.

These are the same eligibility rules already used for sessions, passes, products, and membership packages, see [Eligibility rules](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/general/eligibility-rules) for the full reference. On a page you can restrict by **Membership Required**, **Required Groups**, **Required Qualifications**, or **Profile Field Value**.

> **Note**
>
> Age range and gender are not offered on a page. They decide who may buy or book something, which is a judgement about a person, whereas who may read a page is a judgement about a role.

For example, to keep a page visible only to your coaches:

1. Open the page's settings and scroll to **Who can see this page**.
2. Click **Add Rule Group**.
3. Click **Add Rule** and choose **Required Groups**.
4. Select your **Coaches** group.
5. Click **Save**.

Anyone who is not in the Coaches group now sees a page explaining what they would need to view it, rather than a generic "members only" message. If they are not signed in, they are also offered a link to log in.

> **Note**
>
> If your page already had **Members Only** switched on before this change, it keeps working exactly as before: it is treated as requiring an active membership, using the same rule editor.

## Page banners

Content pages, along with other top-level pages such as Home, Sessions, Membership, and Passes, support a custom banner image displayed behind the page title. Click the **Banner** button in the page toolbar (requires the **Manage Content** permission) to upload one, or the trash icon to remove it.

A banner is separate from the page's content, so it is set the same way whichever editor the page uses. See [Club branding](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/club-branding#page-banners) for full details on banner images.

## Permissions

To use the content editing features, users must have the **Manage Content** permission. This permission allows users to:

- See the **Edit Page** button on pages.
- Enter edit mode to add, configure, delete, and reorder blocks, or edit portlets.
- Save changes, and preview and restore earlier versions of a page.
- Manage pages, their access rules, and site navigation from **Admin > Content > Pages**.

See [Permissions](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/general/permissions) for how to grant this permission to a member.

Users without this permission will see pages as normal visitors and won't have access to any editing features.

## Frequently asked questions

**Which editor does my page use?**
See [How each page is edited](#how-each-page-is-edited). If the page shows a bar across the top of the screen when you click **Edit Page**, it is the page editor.

**Can I hide a page from visitors while I work on it?**
Yes. Leave **Published** off in the page's settings. The page is then only visible to users with the **Manage Content** permission, and a banner on the page reminds you it is unpublished, with a **Publish** button to make it live.

**What happened to Content > Navigation?**
It has been merged into **Admin > Content > Pages**. Instead of a separate menu editor, you drag any page, built-in or blog straight into the **Navigation** area of the same screen that lists all your pages. A bookmark to the old Navigation screen redirects you here automatically.

**Why can't I use the URL `home` for a page?**
That address belongs to your [homepage](https://www.clubpal.app/docs/club-website/homepage). If you type `/home` into your browser, ClubPal sends you straight to your site's root address instead.
